I think every single one of us has sat down in a restaurant, looked at the menu and had absolutely no idea what to order. You know you’ve come to an Italian place, but do you really want Italian food? There’s so much choice, pasta, pizza, steak, salad, and it all sounds delicious and you don’t know what to choose. Well, chefs and waiters have taken to Reddit to let you know exactly what they would and wouldn’t order from your favourite restaurant.
1. Never trust the hollandaise
“I don’t trust hollandaise sauce to not come from a jacuzzi of aged bacterial growth.” Afghan_Moses
Another comment on this thread explained that the problem with hollandaise is that the sauce is made from raw egg and butter which is kept hot enough to be warm, but not hot enough to cook the eggs. Sounds like the perfect place for bacteria to hang out!
2. The specials aren’t safe either!
“The daily specials are usually made up of ingredients that are the oldest in the kitchen. Chicken is boring and overpriced for what it is, I try not to order anything with chicken that I can easily make myself.” southofserious
3. This is just really good advice!
“I avoid something that I think the kitchen doesn’t experience much. If it’s a steakhouse, I don’t order the pasta. If it’s a burger joint, I’ll probably order a burger, not a chicken wrap. Don’t send the kitchen into a frenzy because they can’t remember how to prepare your food. And order something they’re good at making. Don’t go for half-assed. You’re paying for this. Get something that will be good.” Budgiejen
4. There’s no winning with chicken wings
“Soup, specials (when a product is about to go bad and not daily specials like half off pizza Tuesday), and chicken wings. Only because you work a wing night shift and you watch the hundreds of wings splash into the deep fryers and the smell and sight of the chicken fat and juices congealed in the bins from where the baked wings sit before they get fried. It’s a smell that you can’t unsmell. It’s not a gross smell but it’s a particular smell that now makes me feel ill.” Holdmeclserponydanza
5. Well, no more soup for me either!
“Soup of the day. It’s just yesterday’s leftovers.” PounderMcNasty
6. Personally, I wouldn’t trust sushi from anywhere that isn’t a dedicated sushi restaurant. It’s tricky business!
“Depends on the restaurant naturally but any sushi special should be avoided. Orders for the weekend come in on Thursday, anything left over is “oh wow they do half price sushi on Monday!”“chriiistopher
7. I don’t even want to think of people’s dirty hands all over the salad I’m about to eat! Gross!
“I don’t dare touch salads. I’ve seen far too many waiters just shove their ungloved hands on the bins and no one ever washes their hands enough for that to be ok.” Vexation_and_Cookies
8. Some solid advice for cocktail fans – the milk might actually be solid!
“Related: having been a bartender, never order a drink with milk. There are hardly any drinks with milk, meaning hardly any milk is used. That partially-used quart they have behind the bar may have been sitting there for QUITE a while.” TillikumWasFramed
9. I can’t even enjoy my coffee now? This one’s broken my heart!
“I avoid places that make coffee who don’t rinse out the milk pitcher after steaming milk. This means it’s likely the steam wand has crusty milk in it (that will have been cooked), the people aren’t cleaning the coffee machine well, and your coffee will likely taste like shit. Also, did I mention as they haven’t probably cleaned it well (such as the grouphead or steam wand nozzle), any milk/coffee grinds left over will probably have some hardy mould/bacteria growing on them. ENJOY YOUR COFFEE” arabidopsis
10. So the swordfish is a no from me… forever!
“Sword fish. I’ve seen a chef cutting up and cleaning one before and it’s not pretty. Let’s jut say a fish that size picks up a good deal of parasites during its lifetime, and they all start jumping ship at once when they figure out their host is dead…” Largestmoist2499
11. Now I can’t even have the chicken? But that’s pretty much half of my diet!
“Chicken. Too many times have I seen undercooked chicken just because either the kitchen was slammed or the cook was being lazy. If I do order chicken from a restaurant I’ll throughly check it before I take a single bite. Unfortunately I’ve found out many restaurants have this issue.” ImPartyJesus
12. This person has no advice, they just feel the same way we all do right now.
“I am never eating anything ever again.” f0k4ppl3
