Most of us will encounter manipulation at some point or another, and commonly the manipulation will be performed by some fake that has narcissistic traits.
Narcissists constantly search for gratification.
According to the Oxford dictionary, a narcissist is “a person who has an excessive interest in or admiration of themselves.”
Narcissism: Behind The Mask is a book by David Thomas and he reveals the typical signs and traits of narcissism.
While a healthy amount of narcissism is a good thing, it can be quite the opposite.
Extreme narcissists are often manipulative and lie to the people they’re fooling.
Narcissists and fake people are two sides of the same coin, which means spotting them involve similar techniques and signs.
They’ll do anything they can to seem genuine and real, but it’s just a mask they use to hide the flaws in their character.
Behind their wide smiles, they’re bitter, twisted, and totally fake.
Here are a few signs to look out for if you think the person you’re dealing with is fake and a massive narcissist.
1. They’re Egocentric
Narcissists and fake people are extremely egocentric. As soon as their ego and image are under attack, they’ll stop at nothing to repair it.
If you spot this in train in someone you know, then it’s a clear sign that you’re dealing with a narcissist and someone who is totally fake, especially when they’re bragging and admiring themselves to the point that this admiration is forced on you.
Narcissists make everything about them, but they also only present themselves in the best of lights, so they’ll constantly look good.
Listen to how they’re speaking. You’ll soon notice that they can’t stop talking about themselves and they over-emphasize their actions in relation to the story.
2. They’re Accomplished
They can’t bear it when they come across someone who is more accomplished and successful than themselves.
The only way a narcissist knows how to deal with this situation is by downplaying another person’s achievements.
Narcissists will even insult another person’s character if they feel threatened by someone.
3. They’re Two-Faced
This behavior totally spells out someone who is a phony. If they’re two different people in front of you and behind your back, then they’re a fake!
Because narcissists like to make themselves look good, they’ll always try their best to seem charming and likable. But this is just a mask.
When a narcissist doesn’t receive the gratification they think they deserve, they can become passive-aggressive.
They may be offensive or even claim that they are just misunderstood, and often even display jealousy towards people who are more successful than themselves.
They also display this type behavior to people who are critical of them and their work. They’ll also continuously complain that they are misunderstood, unappreciated and overworked to make you feel bad. They resent people who are more fortunate and successful.
4. They Play The Victim A Lot
Fake people love to play the victim to try and manipulate you into pitying them.
Some narcissists even go so far as to lie to cover up their mistakes and failure.
They’ll try to avoid being at fault at all costs when a mistake is made and will try to be the victim of an unfair system.
5. When Cornered They Fight Dirty
A narcissist will use triangulation to win an argument.
For those of you who don’t know, triangulation is a type of manipulation tactic where someone will use a third party to communicate with another person.
Usually, the narcissist in question will convince the second person that the other person is wrong.
This gives the narcissist the feeling that they have more support from another person, which makes them the winner in the argument or conversation.
6. They Blame Others
Fake people like to play the victim, but they also lay the blame on others when their integrity is at risk.
Whenever a narcissist feels threatened, they’ll often point the blame at someone else.
A narcissist will do anything they can to pass the blame to someone else and will even guilt others to make them feel perfect.
If a narcissist tries to blame you for their troubles, remember that you are not responsible for their actions, and it’s just them being fake.
7. They’re Better Than Everyone Else
Fake people believe they are better than everyone else, which makes it very rare for a narcissist to change themselves without seeking the help of a medical professional.
A narcissist/ fake person will often say that they are who they are and that there’s nothing wrong with them!
Most narcissists aren’t even aware that they have a problem and offering them help often results in an outburst argument.
Another way a narcissist may manipulate you is by telling you that the way they are is perfectly normal and healthy and that you’re the one with something wrong. Again, this is never right.
