Sepsis is what happens when your body has to work overtime to combat an infection in the blood stream. You may also know it as septicemia. The immune system is compromised by this process, and it can lead to problems with your body that can sometimes be fatal. It can be especially dangerous if you’re suffering with other health problems such as AIDS, an immune deficiency, or recovery from a recent surgery.
We’ve found ten symptoms that show that you could be suffering from a blood infection. If you see any of these in yourself, it’s time to get checked out by a doctor.
1. An abnormal or irregular heartbeat
Advanced cases of blood infections can cause an abnormal heartbeat in patients. The cause of this is the lack of oxygen rich blood flowing to the major organs within the body is the cause of the irregular heartbeat sufferers may experience. Your heartbeat may speed up or slow down without warning, especially after exercise or other over exertion. If you feel that there may be something abnormal going on with your heartbeat, make sure to go to your doctor, as this could be an advanced case of blood infection.
2. You suffer from nausea and vomiting
Nausea and vomiting are always a good indicator that something is wrong with your body. In this case, nausea and vomiting could indicate that you’re suffering with a blood infection and these are common early signs of sepsis. A lot of infections start by making you sick, so if you’re suddenly vomiting and you didn’t eat any dodgy looking chicken in the last 24 hours, you’re going to want to get yourself to a doctor. Be especially careful if any of the other signs on this list are present.
3. Serious and sudden agitation
You could suddenly feel angry and agitated for all number of reasons. Maybe your dog has pooped on the carpet or your boss is being particularly annoying this week, but if you’re finding yourself feeling agitated for no reason at all the answer could lie in your blood. Just agitation alone isn’t enough to signal a blood infection, but if it’s accompanied by the other symptoms on this list then it’s a particularly telling sign. Normally, blood infection induced agitation comes on very suddenly, increases rapidly and then lasts for a few days.
4. You have the chills
Now what’s cooler than being cool? Ice cold! Oh, and having the chills from a blood infection, of course. This normally occurs in advanced cases of blood infections, and causes your body temperature to plummet as your body fights off the infection. You may find yourself shivering and shaking and, if left untreated, this could lead to hypothermia. Don’t let yourself chill out for too long, make sure you go to see a doctor as soon as possible! I know I’ve said that before, but I’m going to keep saying it until you get the point!
5. Spots and redness on your skin
If you think you may be suffering from a blood infection, the first place you’re going to want to look is your skin. Your extremities (your arms, legs, hands and feet) will commonly show red and spotted patches on the skin that can indicate the start of a blood disease. If you notice red and spotty patches on your body, ask your doctor to take a look at them.
